Pixel 4a - The best compact Android

It has been a long time since Google launched a device. But the silence has been broken and Google has come up with the brand new Pixel 4a in the same footprints of former 3a. The Pixel 3a was the first device in the budget lineup by Google and it was well praised for its camera performance. 4a is continuing the trend with even better camera performance with the same hardware. Lets dig into it right away.

Pixel 4a is launched at $349 that roughly converts to around 27000₹. It is in the competing segment of the recently launched One Plus's Nord and can also be compared with the iPhone se 2020.
These are the key specs 4a,

Display - 5.81" P oled display with 1080p resolutions that converts to pixel density of 443 ppi that is a real crisp display. It has a hole punch cutout for front camera in the top left corner.

Processor - It is equipped with Qualcomms Snapdragon 730G.

Camera - A single 12.2 megapixels camera unlike 4 and 5 less usefull cameras.

Battery - Not too big or small that is 3140 mah battery bundled with an 18 watt fast charger in the box which takes one and a half hour to charge it from 0 to 100.

Build - It is covered with a soft polycarbonate with matte finish which is nat a fingerprint magnet like glass back panels. The front has Gorilla Glass 3 with 2.5D curve around the edges. Overall thickness is 8.1 mm which gives a slim look to the device

Variant - Only single variant as of now with 6 gigs of RAM paired 128 gigs of onboard storage.

Now lets get to the overall look,
The phone is really compact and gives a vibe of the phones that we used in the golden era of android. It feels sturdy in hand and is very easy to handle with single hand. It does not come with the sandwich design like all other phones but it feels comfy in hands. The thickness is at 8.1 mm so it is a slim device. The camera is arranged in a square shaped bamp on the back at top left corner. Single led flash is diagonally placed with the main camera.

Google has launched it in only single colour and memory variant that is 'Just Black' as they call it paired with 6 gigs of RAM and 128 gigs of ROM. That is plenty for average users but if you download and store videos on your phones then you will be disappointed as there is no option to expand the storage.

Coming to the display It is a 5.8 inches display stretched on the whole front of the phone with a single hole punchr selfie cam. This ia the best looking device in the whole pixel lineup. It does not have larger bezels like the pixel 4 or that huge downward protruding notch like pixel 4xl. It has regular 60 Hz of refresh rate though, so it will be a bit disappointing to the ones who have used a 90 or 120 Hz screens. But it wont be of any problems for those who haven't. And as the screen is under 6 inches it does not demand that much of battery for itself contributing to a great battery life.

Camera is the most highlighted feature of this device as it is a pixel device. The hopes were high that it would come with at least aither an ultrawide or a depth sensor but what can we expect from google at this price point looking at $799 launch price of pixel 4xl. But the camera though single nails it in every aspect. May it be in good lighting, artificial lighting and even in no lighting. This camera is way beyond its competitors. Thanks to the Google's software processing the night mode is just unmatchable. It is also packed with the Google specific astrophotography, but it requires very steady hands or a tripod. But the results are worth the wait. The results just leave us in awe that if it would have been a bigger sensor like Sony's IMX 586 or 686 there won't be a need of DSLRs anymore. The 8 MP front camera is also amazing, giving great selfies with rich details and true to life skin tones. The bokeh effect of portrait mode is based on software processing. But you won't be able to differentiate the photos from the ones taken with a dedicated depth sensor. The edge detection is class leading.

Talking about the battery life, it will last you through a full day as it has got a small display and that too an oled so it gives nearly 7 hours of screen on time with moderate to heavy usage including gaming, video recording, video playback, social media and web browsing. And charging it would take around 90 minutes with the 18 watt charger included in the box.

The performance on this device is great. The SD730G comes with a GPU processing unit so it can handle everyday task like breaze. And as per the gaming is concerned nearly any popular android game can be played on this device and the games run smoothly. You can play Pubg at high graphics. And Call of duty can also be played at 60 fps. It also handles Fortnite at 30 fps smoothly. You cannot expect it to perform like a flagship device. But if you are an average gamer then you won't be disappointed a bit.

If you are in for a compact phone then this is the perfect choice with flagship level camera and a battery tha wil easily last you through a whole day. I hope to see some more phones with compact form factor, cause everyone does not like those bigger screens.

The plastic build is a bit letdown and a screen with gorilla glass feels outdated. But you can give it a try for bloatware free stock android experience.
